The Aironic AC 5000 is the champion of industry, it is the only real industrial strength air cleaner / ioniser that lives up to its promise. Our passion
Aironic has been in business for 26 years (established 1980) designed, tested, built a highly innovative and competitive range of air purifying products that counteract the effects of airborne pollution in the indoor environment. The company made a decision early in its growth to market its products overseas and is now selling into over 30 countries. As part of this strategy, it has used the services and expertise of the NSW Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) to develop a sales presence in the key export ma rkets of India and China.
Aironic is growing at the rate of 15 per cent per annum with nearly 65 per cent of its turnover generated by export sales, it looks forward to further support from DSRD to consolidate this performance.
Offering a solution to widespread problem
Gerald Marceau, Founder of Aironic, is a long-term advocate of the importance of improving indoor air quality. He notes, according to the latest CSIRO research, poor indoor air quality is costing Australia & Australians nearly $12 billion a year in sickness & lost productivity.
The Aironic technology is based on a three-stage system. A pre-filters first remove pollens, large particles, dust from the air plus absorbing odours and smoke; the second stage High Effiency Particulate Arrestant (HEPA) filter removes all sub-micron size particles; then the third stage the air is cleansed / charged with negative ions, which restore the ion balance, providing a natural barrier to pollutants.
The company has designed products tailored to a wide range of applications: homes, offices, factories, hospitals, bars, clubs, hotels and motor vehicles. Many high profile organisations, including (HCF) " Hospital Contributions Fund of Australia", support the product and it is listed with Commonweath Departmentof Human Services and Health since 1995 (TGA) Therapeutic Goods Association.
Embracing an export strategy
In 1985 Gerald Marceau made the early strategic decision to develop export markets. "This involved a mixture of single-minded determination, because we were small and no one had heard of us, plus a great deal of travel." He set about finding effective distributors, appointing the first one in Singapore, now exports to Thailand, Malaysia,New Zealand, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
The company realised, however, that it could benefit by drawing on DSRD's widespread expertise in export development to support its entry into some of the more challenging markets.
The relationship began in 2000 when the company was one of the first to be invited by DSRD to participate in the Australian Technology Showcase (ATS). "The ATS relationship has been highly beneficial in enhancing our marketing tools for overseas expansion (including help with our website) and in introducing me to a number of key decision-makers in business and government circles," says Mr Marceau.
Building market relationships
Aironic company is an active participant of "DSRD" trade missions, in the New Export Program. It travelled with the Department to india in 2002, visiting Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. "While we had been to India before, the mission was highly beneficial because it provided both 'official' prestige and the pre-arrangement for us of a number of significant business appointments," says Gerald Marceau.
He said that India is a difficult market for Aironic because of the need to educate potential customers about the enduring benefits of the products. "It is a learning experience for both parties, but in the long term we hope to establish a manafacturing facility and DSRD is helping us to lay the groundwork for this goal.
Last year, on a trade mission to China, Aironic was able to re-establish some earlier contacts and to meet some significant officials. "In this market, it is critical to meet the official decision-makers and DSRD arranged a number of these contacts. In fact, one of our products is now used in the office of Shanghai's mayor, one of those contacts," he said.
Gerald Marceau emphasises that the China market requires considerable patience. "The first building blocks have been laid and, incedentally, and Aironic air cleaner is now displayed in a store for Australian-made goods in Shanghai and this arose because the proprietor of that store was on our trade mission. In addition, one of our air cleaners is in the office of the Mayor of Shanghai, as a result of introductions made on the same trade mission." While the company is pursuing a dual strategy of distributor-driven and direct sales, it also aims eventually to manafacture in this market.
Planning for the future
He believes the company is on a sound platform, based on a philosophy of continual improvement, which will allow a change in its marketing balance to more direct sales to its current and future customer base. The DSRD trade missions program has provided targeted advice and assistance to boost this strategy particularly in export markets with huge potential, such as India and China.

Dear Sir, I am writing to thank you for your fantastic products. I had bought an AE2000 a few months ago and after using it I have noticed a dramatic increase in my health and the air quality in the house. Ionisation
The Problems with indoor air
To ensure a healthy existence indoors, humans, animals, and plants require air which is:
- free of harmful pollutants and bacteria, and
- has a balanced electrical charge positive and negative ions.
Fresh air is a mixture of gas molecules. Most are electrically neutral but some molecules either lose or gain an electron and become either positive or negative air ion molecules. They are produced from the natural effects of wind, surf, lightning, falling water, vegetation, cosmic and solar radiation and radio-active elements in the soil.
Negative ion molecules are unstable and deplete rapidly within an indoor environment, due to lack of the above natural effects. They become neutral or convert to positive ion molecules. An environment lacking negative ions and abundant in positive ion molecules, or little or no ions, can have adverse effects on humans, animals, and plants.
The majority of an average person's time is spent indoors. Plants and animals are increasingly housed indoors for domestic and commercial purposes. Some factors that interfere with our source of clean ionised air are:
- indoor living,
- air conditioners, and
- high levels of pollutants in the atmosphere.
Indoor air is not influenced by the forces of nature, previously detailed. This alone can have damaging effects, due to the depleted negative ions in the atmosphere. Polluted, or air-conditioned indoor environments can cause discomfort, lethargy, decreased immunity, desease, and even threaten the life of humans, animals, and plants. Expensive medical, photographic, computer, musical, and sound equipment can all be damaged or ruined by the particle matter in the air, that eventually settles into the crevices and tiny spaces.
Indoor air in most circumstances is more polluted than outdoor air. Air-conditioning heats and cools air, but does not clean the air. In fact it can contribute to the spread of pollutants, desease and odours throughout buildings. This is referred to as "Sick Building Syndrome".
The solution
Many countries are now in the process of creating legislation to regulate indoor air quality. The following organisations are available to assist Governments around the world to deal with the growing problem of indoor air pollution
- the Environment Protection Authorities (E.P.A.),
- the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.),
- the International Labour Organisation (I.L.O.),
- Local Health Services,
- Occupation Health and Safety (O.H & S) Groups.
The Nations Medical Research Council (N.H.M.R.C.) in Australia are advising the government on what is acceptable standard of indoor air quality. Eventually, Australia will also have regulations for indoor air quality.
With increasing media coverage and awareness of the problems caused by indoor living, many people all over the world are not waiting for governments legislation. The demand for Aironic air cleaner and air ionisers is rapidly growing.
